Thinking outside the box: Establishments you never thought need a Graphic Designer.

When we think of graphic designing we normally think of someone designing for local business, Billboards, or advertising and marketing promotions for your next party at a club. What I've learned from graphic designing is that the opportunities are limitless. It's a big umbrella that leads to many other establishments that we hardly even think of. One in particular that I had the chance to experience for myself was being able to combine graphic design and history together. Weird? I know but an art major and undercover history buff like myself loved it!

Some of the past places I've worked at and exhibts I have worked on:

  • Center for Public History :sports, counter cultural, and education exhibit.

  • Waring Lab - long swamp archeology exhibit

  • Cultural arts Center: Multiple Art Exhibitions

  • Puppetry Arts - Jim Henson (super cool because I got to work the Muppets 🤗)

Coming up with the designs was a factor in the project but the main objective was how to tell a story through graphic designing.

This consist of

  • How do you invoke emotions and moods through color ?

  • How do you spark memories through images?

But most importantly what typefaces best fits and how do you come up with a logo that is the face of an exhibition?

My favourite exhibit I designed was the University History Counter Cultural Exhibition. Adding history and doing research for graphics is actually fun. What was ”wave” back in the 60s and 70s? Instantly funky type faces, vivid colors & patterns, and groovy bell-bottoms pops up the google search engine.  All that can be used to create a design, of course what I came up with were  pastels, psychedelic patterns, flowers, and types faces from ”That 70s Show” (cliche I know but it works 🤷🏽‍♀️).

What I'm trying to say is think outside the box. What better way to portray your idea through color, imagery, typefaces, and catchy tagline with the help of a professional graphic designer?  If you think about it we can be used for almost anything.
